Big Game Hunting Live presents TableTop Day 2015 [Gather Your] Party!

by Rae

For this year's International TableTop Day, Proud Lion are proud to present the TableTop Day 2015 [Gather Your] Party! Join us from 6:30pm until 11pm at 2PIGS in Cheltenham for an epic evening of board and party games! We will be playing host to an assortment of games, including:
  • Cash 'N Guns tournament, where players will compete for a place at the top table, the Mafia Don Showdown!
  • exhibition-style Star Trek: Attack Wing, where players are invited to bring a 60 point fleet (one or two ships) to join forces with the Oversized Borg Cube or help defend the DS9! *
  • Star Wars: X-Wing "Podrace In Space", where players are invited to bring a single ship (points TBD) and speed through two laps to be first to the finish line! This is just a bit of fun for TableTop Day! *
  • D&D Attack Wing custom scenario, where players are invited to bring a 80 point legion to combat each other over hand crafted tabletop scenery! *
  • late night game of Cards Against Humanity, minimum age 16 - please be aware this game can be considered offensive and may not suitable for those of a sensitive disposition!
  • Dead of Winter (TableTop Edition), a new and very popular post-apocalypse game where humanity is struggling to survive a zombie infestation, but a betrayer hides amongst them...
  • Pints of Blood: it's Shaun of the Dead in board game form. Seriously. We may even put the soundtrack on!

Several more games will be available to play, but feel free to bring your own as well! Every ticket purchased includes one entry into the Cheltenham TableTop Day Prize Draw. More details about the prize draw will be available soon.

* Please contact Proud Lion to reserve a slot for the Star Trek: Attack Wing, Star Wars: X-Wing, or D&D Attack Wing games. Participation is open to all ticket holders.

A free buffet will be available to all ticket holders in the venue, and drinks will be available for purchase from the bar.

So what are you waiting for? Get your tickets now!

Tickets are available for ages 14+. Children under 14 are free when accompanied by a paying adult (maximum two children per adult). Advance tickets will be available for purchase until 5pm on the day. Tickets purchased online will incur a 50p booking fee. Tickets on the door will be available from 6:30pm for £5.00.

Rae is starting to wonder if she can clone herself and play all the games.

Big Game Hunting Live presents TableTop Day 2015

by Rae

Every year, Proud Lion takes part in an event devoted to encouraging people to play more games: International TableTop Day! This year the local gaming community in Cheltenham is joining forces to bring you the biggest and best TableTop Day yet. On Saturday 11 April 2015, take part in a Camden Crawl-style game day, where an assortment of locations will leave players spoiled for choice!

What is International TableTop Day?
International TableTop Day is an annual event celebrating tabletop gaming. People are encouraged to play more games, anywhere they can, and encourage others to join in. Many locations run open gaming for anyone to get involved, as we are! For more information about TableTop Day, how it began, and other events running on the day, check out the official website at www.tabletopday.com.

Where can I play games during the day?
Here at Proud Lion, we'll be offering a selection of card and dice games throughout the day, as well as a few of our favourite board games. Some of the games on offer include King of New York, Forbidden Desert, Munchkin Panic, Fluxx, and Ninja Dice! More details about when you can play these (and more!) will be available soon. All games will be open to the public, so just turn up and play! Proud Lion will be hosting open gaming in store from 10am to 5pm.

Around the corner at the 2PIGS, Pork Chop Gaming will be hosting tables full of epic games! Join in for some Warhammer 40K, Star Trek: Attack Wing, Star Wars: X-Wing, Wings of Glory and more. Pork Chop Gaming will be hosting their event from 10am until 6pm.

Slightly further afield you'll find St Paul's Boardroom! Based at St Paul's Church, this is where you'll find eurogames, co-ops, and classics. Some of the games you'll find here include Carcassonne, Settlers of Catan, 7 Wonders, and Five Tribes. St Paul's Boardroom will be running from 10am to 6pm.

Why should I go to more than one place?
You mean besides trying out a bunch of new games and meeting like-minded gamers? How about a prize draw where you can win some cooling gaming stuff? To encourage people to try out new locations and expand the local gaming community, Proud Lion will be hosting the Cheltenham TableTop Day Prize Draw!

The rules are simple. When you go to any venue, you can pick up one of our TableTop Day flyers. Play at least one game at any of the participating venues to get your flyer stamped or signed by the organiser. If you collect two stamps, you will earn one entry into the prize draw. Collect three stamps to get three entries! You will also receive one entry to the draw if you purchase a ticket to [Gather Your] Party! (more details below).

Prize draw? What kind of stuff could I win?
Prizes are currently set to include a month's membership with Pork Chop Gaming, a Munchkin hoody, games, vouchers, and more! A full list of prizes will be available soon.

What is [Gather Your] Party?
[Gather Your] Party is a Proud Lion hosted event taking place at the 2PIGS! Just in case we haven't packed enough into TableTop Day, in the evening we will be running even more gaming! Some of the events include a Cash 'N Guns tournament, exhibition-style Attack Wing games, and a late night game of Cards Against Humanity. There will be food, there will be a bar, and there will be a lot of gaming going on! Details about how to get tickets for this event will be available very shortly.

Questions? Comments?

Feel free to contact us at shop@proudlion.co.uk. If any other venues are participating in tableTop Day and would like us to help spread the word, please do get in touch!

Rae has decided that gaming is definitely more important than sleep.

Here is our current schedule (subject to change):

To grab yourself up to two reserved game slots, just email Proud Lion at shop@proudlion.co.uk. Playing games on the day will earn you up to two free entries into our TableTop Day Raffle!

TableTop Day Raffle

As with last year, we shall be raffling off some fantastic prizes. Players will receive one free entry per game played on the day (up to maximum of two). Additional entries can also be purchased for £1 each. Money raised from the raffle will be donated to charity.

So, shall we get to the prizes then?

Grand prize: £20 of Proud Lion gift vouchers
Second prize: voucher for 10% off any game in store (maximum value £50)
Runner-up prize (x3): Munchkin booster pack

King of Tokyo Tournament

As you can see, we have several slots for the final game of the day, King of Tokyo. This game will be run as a tournament, but that doesn't mean you need to have played before! This game, like the others, is open to all, and we are happy to teach you if you're new to it.

Participants will be divided into three groups, with a maximum of five people in each group. Each of those groups will play a single game. The winners will then have a three-player stand off to determine the overall winner. That person will win the King of Tokyo tournament prize.

That prize? It's the SPACE PENGUIN.

Space Penguin is a genuine, playable add-on character for King of Tokyo. The winner of the tournament will be taking him home!

TableTop Day is now less than a week away. Reserve those game slots, and don't forget your raffle entries. Play games, win prizes! See you all April 5th!

Big Game Hunting Live presents TableTop Day 2014

by Rae

Our monthly board game event, Big Game Hunting Live, will be taking a break in April. Wait, come back – there's a great reason for it, I promise! Instead we will be hosting our own all-day event for the second International TableTop Day!

Mark your calendars for Saturday 5th April, when we will be showcasing different games all day long, from 10:30 right up until 5pm! Each game will have a number of player slots up for grabs, and playing games will earn you free entries into the TableTop Day Raffle. Even better, our final game of the day will be a mini-tournament, where you have the opportunity to win a unique addition to the game!

What is TableTop Day?

TableTop Day is an annual, international event dreamed up by the Geek and Sundry team who helped to create Wil Wheaton's board game webshow, TableTop. For a review of TableTop, click here.

How does it work?

Throughout the day, we will be demonstrating a selection of board and card games to anyone who wants to give it a go. Don't worry if you've never played before, as we will happily teach those who want to learn! Experienced players are also welcome, of course! Most games are family-friendly, and are suitable for ages 8 and up.

As you can see, most of the games scheduled have a certain number of slots available. These slots are the maximum number of players per game. If there are certain games you absolutely want to play, don't wait until the day! You can reserve a slot for a maximum of two games by emailing shop@proudlion.co.uk with your game choices. Any slots not claimed before the day will be open to players on a first-come, first-served basis. If time is available, additional games may be played.

What about the raffle?

Play games, win prizes! A TableTop Day Raffle will be held on the day to win some great prizes. You can get up to two free entries by playing games on the day, one per game. Entries can also be purchased for £1 each, for those who aren't playing or would like more than two entries. Further details about the prizes available will be revealed soon.

What games will you be playing?

While this is subject to change, here is our current running schedule:
10:00 – 11:00: assorted small games (no slots for this one, just turn up and play!)

    11:00 – 12:00: Netrunner (slots TBC) *

    12:00 – 13:30: Forbidden Island / Forbidden Desert (8 slots, 4 per game)

    13:30 – 14:30: Castle Panic (6 slots)

    14:30 – 15:30: Smash Up (4 slots)

15:30 – 17:00: King of Tokyo Tournament (slots TBC)
* Please note that Netrunner is not suitable for children.

Did you say something about a tournament?

I did! Our final game of the day, King of Tokyo, will also be a mini-tournament. Both new and experienced players are welcome to join in! More details about this will be available soon.

What else do I need to know?

More details about the games will be posted soon, including a list of what small games will be available.

Big Game Hunting Live - Fluxx the Board Game

On Saturday, 7th of September, Proud Lion will once again be hosting their monthly gaming event, Big Game Hunting Live! In a change to our previous schedule, we will be playing the newly released Fluxx: The Board Game!

This brand new board game is inspired by the brilliant series of card games by the same name. In these games, the cards are constantly changing the rules, and even how you win the game.

The board game expands on this, by adding a board made up of tiles whose positions will regularly alter too!

As far as the rules go, many of them will be very familiar to Fluxx players: drawing cards, playing cards, hand limits, and so on all make their appearances. The key change to the gameplay comes down to winning the game. Rather than matching a single goal in play, your mission is to achieve several goals, and be the first to collect the number of goals required to win.

Check the video below if you'd like to watch a demonstration, or check out the rules by reading them here.

In response to feedback from previous BGHL events, the timetable for games will be changed. Rather than having set game times, we will be running open gaming between 10:30am and 2pm, and again between 3pm and 5pm. Feel free to show up during either session to learn, watch, or play.

And don't forget, anyone who participates on the day will get a voucher to purchase Fluxx: The Board Game at 10% off! See you all next week!

Rae is so happy to be back home with her family. And her games.

Big Game Hunting Live - A Change of Plans

For those of you who enjoy our monthly Big Game Hunting Live sessions, please be aware that the game being showcased on our next event, September 7th, has been changed. Previously we had been scheduled to play Munchkin. Instead - due to its arrival in the UK this week - we are pleased to announce we will instead be playing Fluxx: The Board Game!

More information about the game will be posted soon, as well as further details about the day itself. Just watch this space! Or add yourself to the Facebook event for all the latest information.

If you are disappointed with the change and had your heart set on playing Munchkin, don't worry! We will be looking to reschedule Munchkin for another BGH event in the coming months.

Rae is waltzing about in Northampton this week. Okay, maybe less waltzing and more spirited walking...

Big Game Hunting Live - Ticket To Ride

Are you ready for another Big Game Hunting Live? This is a monthly gaming event that takes place on the first Saturday of every month. Players will get a chance to learn and play a different game every month.

On Saturday 3rd August, we will be playing Ticket to Ride!

In this fantastic German game, you try to connect cities across the continent with railroads. The longer your route is, the more points you get. You get extra points for completing your Destination cards – but be careful, as not finishing them will make you lose points!

This game was featured on season one of TableTop and can be viewed below.

If you've never played before, or just want to brush up on the rules, we recommend you come to one of the learn-to-play sessions, taking place at 11am and 1pm. We'll show you the ropes and get you up to speed on how to play.

If you're already familiar with the game and want to jump right in, come along to the full game session at 3pm! This is also suitable for people who attend the learn-to-play sessions earlier in the day. No sign-up is required, and participation will be on a first-come, first-served basis.

On the day, we will be playing Ticket to Ride: Europe, one of the many editions of the game that have been released. The original game is based in the United States, while other versions include Germany and Nordic Countries. There are smaller expansions including USA 1910, Europe 1912, plus maps for Africa, Asia, Marklin, and the Nordic countries, last year's Halloween expansion and even a Ticket to Ride card game.

All participants will receive a voucher that entitle them to 10% off Ticket To Ride, or any of the expansions or supplements. As Proud Lion is only a small store, we only hold a limited stock so you may have to backorder your copy if we sell out on the day. Other editions and expansions are available to order only.

Rae promises not to hit the table at the end of the game!

Big Game Hunting Live - The Last Night On Earth

This weekend heralds the arrival of the second Big Game Hunting Live! This is our monthly gaming event that takes place on the first Saturday of every month. Players will get a chance to learn and play a different game every month.

On Saturday 6th July, we will be playing Last Night on Earth! This horror board game is all about facing an oncoming zombie horde in a small town. You can play as the humans struggling to survive, or the shuffling zombies trying to stop them. The board changes every time, and there are multiple scenarios to play, so you get a new experience every time! This game was featured on season one of TableTop.

If you like the base game, you may also like one of the game's expansions: Growing Hunger and Timber Peak. Growing Hunger provides you with new scenarios, characters, items, and boards, to name a few. Timber Peak is both a standalone game and an expansion, featuring several new game components as well as some new gameplay features. You might also like the Zombies with Grave Weapons miniature set, or the Hero Pack which offers up new heroes to add to your game.

All participants will receive a voucher that entitle them to 10% off Last Night on Earth, or any of the expansions or supplements. As Proud Lion is only a small store, we only hold a limited stock so you may have to backorder your copy if we sell out on the day. Expansions are currently only available if you place a customer order (NB: a 25% deposit may be required).

Rae is really enjoying all the sunshine this week!

Big Game Hunting - TableTop Day 2013: The Rundown

With our very own TableTop Day event less than a week away, now seems like a good time to give you all a quick rundown of the games we'll be playing. If any of them appeal to you, please send an email to sign up for a game slot on Saturday, 30 March!

The raffle prizes!

Every sign up nets you a free entry into the TableTop Day raffle, with prizes including £20 of Proud Lion gift vouchers and a copy of Zombie Dice! For information about signing up and available game slots, please click here.

First up is Small World, a light-hearted fantasy board game where the game world is simply too small for you all to hold territories peacefully. Players use a multitude of powerful races to conquer as many lands as they can and defend them from their fellow conquerers. However, no single race is strong enough to hold those lands forever. Eventually, your race must fall into decline - enabling you to take on a new race and once again begin conquering the world.

Unsurprisingly, all of this is done in the pursuit of wealth. Every territory you successfully claim earns you coins, even if your race has gone into decline. The player with the most coins at the end of the game wins. This game comes with a number of expansions, all of which will be available to play with this weekend. Click here to see the full review for this game, or visit the Small World website.

Next we have Fluxx, a card game that has the simplest rules in the world - right up until you change them. You start with the basic rule: draw a card, then play a card. Cards that you can play include Keepers (help you to win), Creepers (keep you from winning most of the time), Actions (let you do cool stuff), Goals (determine how you win the game), and New Rules (change the rules of how you play). The game ends when any of the players have the cards shown on the current Goal card, which of course can change as easily as the rules!

The best part of Fluxx is that in comes in so many varieties. There's a version for pirates, zombies, Wizard of Oz, science fiction, Monty Python, and more besides. Each has completely unique cards, and some of them introduce new card types to make gameplay even more fun. For the full review of this game, look here. You can also find out more on the Fluxx homepage.

Around midday we'll be having a go at Level 7 [Escape]. This is a cooperative board game in which players are trapped in an alien facility, and are struggling to get out alive. Your captive character must explore the facility, one random tile at a time, in order to complete objectives. You'll be faced with guards, clones, and events which will affect various aspects of your character, such as their health and their fear level. You'll also manage to get new items and skills to help your character survive the facility.

This is a game which includes several different scenarios, making sure every play through is unique. Each scenario even has three difficulty levels, allowing you to choose how much of a challenge you want to go up against. If you want to see more about Level 7 [Escape], check out the website here.

Later in the afternoon, we'll be having a good old game of Munchkin. This is a dungeon crawling card game that pulls jokes from just about every role playing game there is. Game play involves kicking open doors, fighting monsters, and looting treasures. You can even ask your friends playing with you to help fight those monsters, and share your treasures with them. But you may discover your friends are later helping the monsters and stealing your stuff instead in a desperate attempt to keep you from winning the game!

Like Fluxx, there are a number of different themed versions of this game. Unlike Fluxx, different Munchkin games can be combined to make your game experience more unique. Some examples are Star Munchkin (which will be available this Saturday!), Super Munchkin, Munchkin Cthulhu, and Munchkin Zombies, but there are plenty more to choose from. Small booster packs are also released fairly regularly, creating additional cards which can be added to your existing Munchkin decks. If you want to see the full review, you can find it here. You can also wander over to the Munchkin website for more details.

And finally, the newest game on our TableTop Day event, is Goblins, Inc. You play as a goblin in a factory, where the boss goblin is about to retire. He's offering up his job to the goblin who makes the best giant-mechanical-robot-of-doom - and by best, he really means whichever robot happens to survive the longest. This is a game that you play in teams, but don't count on your teammate to help you out for long, since you change sides halfway through the game!

This is a game that has a lot of elements that will feel familiar to Galaxy Trucker players. You first concentrate on building a robot with various tiles, then have a combat round where the robots are slowly torn apart by the other side. Whichever robot makes it to the end of the round with the most points (and generally, with more of their robot intact) wins the round. After two or three rounds, the goblin - sorry, player - with the most points wins. Also, while this game is designed for four players, there are adapted rules for playing with only two or three people. To find out more about this game, you can take a look here.

See a favourite game in our list? Or maybe a game that you've not played before, but would like to try? Sign up for a slot ASAP. See you Saturday!

Rae is doing her best to keep warm and bake ALL the cookies!

Big Game Hunting - International TableTop Day 2013

Saturday 30th March is the first International TableTop Day!

Some of you are already familiar with TableTop, a web series hosted by Wil Wheaton to showcase board and card games. Now the creative minds behind the show at Geek and Sundry have announced the first ever International TableTop Day! Players all over the world are being encouraged to go to their local game shop and play more games.

Proud Lion is happy to announce that we will be hosting our very own TableTop Day event! All day long, we'll have board and card games running, including Fluxx, Munchkin, and Level 7.

To encourage as many people to participate as we can, Proud Lion will also be holding a raffle! Everyone who signs up for a game slot will get a free entry in the raffle. Further entries can be purchased for £1 each. Any profit made will be donated to local charity, Winston's Wish.

Big Game Hunting - TableTop

If you enjoy games and haven't yet seen TableTop, you are truly missing out on a great webshow. TableTop, written and hosted by Wil Wheaton, is a series that aims to introduce people to table top gaming, and get them interested in the many different games out there. With four episodes aired and a new episode due this Friday, it's already doing a fantastic job.

So far the show has covered a good range of board games, such as Settlers of Catan, Ticket to Ride, and Zombie Dice. The show is structured with an introduction to the game by Wil to explain the basic concept and rules. This is followed by twenty minutes of gameplay, where any additional notes or rules are explained as they appear. These are often shown as screen overlays, providing information without slowing down the skillful pacing of the show. Every game is described in just enough detail to be able to follow along without difficulty.

However, not every aspect of gameplay is explained particularly well. In every game, there seems to be a few things that are left out. Sometimes information is left far too late into the episode, such as the importance of re-deploying units in Small World. Other times an important facet of the game is barely touched on, and not featured at all in the gameplay. This is particularly true in Settlers of Catan, where the ability to trade with the bank and the usefulness of port settlements is all but ignored.

Each episode also features several guest players. The list of guests so far has provided a very good mix of people, ranging from people who play games all the time to those who have played a game of Monopoly or two. So far we've seen the likes of Jenna Busch, Grant Imahara, Freddie Wong, James Kyson and several others. Wil Wheaton's wife Anne has even joined in! This mix allows for a great deal of banter and plenty of energy in the episodes, making them a joy to watch.

Well, this is true for most episodes, at least. The second in the series, which features Settlers of Catan, is by far the least entertaining of the bunch. The conversation is often limited to players trying to trade resources, and the energy in the game is almost nonexistent. It must be said that watching a game of Settlers is always less entertaining than playing it, but this one quickly becomes tedious.

Even with its flaws, TableTop achieves what it sets out to do, and has shown me a few new games that have since become personal favourites. There's possibly no better way to get a bird's eye view of how these games are played and introduce them to new players. Each episode also links to player interviews and gag reals for additional content if the episodes themselves aren't enough!
